Some Joy: Trump's Name Comes Down from the Kennedy Center
Could this mark the turning point for his second regime?
Ding dong - Trump’s name has been removed from the Kennedy Center! But as with everything that Trump does, it came with loads of drama and hissy fits. Could this mark a turning point as we head into midterms? We explore.
Background:
In Week 82’s list, on May 29, a federal judge ruled Trump’s rebranding of the Kennedy Center violated the law, and ordered the regime to take down all signage and eliminate all references to Trump within 14 days, citing, “Congress gave the Kennedy Center its name, and only Congress can change it.” That 14 days expired yesterday, June 12.
Trump’s reaction was to act like a grade schooler, and whine that if he couldn’t have his way, he didn’t want it anyway, and it was no good without him.
He posted a rant, well several rants, on Truth Social, writing “Unless I am free to do what I do better than anyone else, bring this Institution back, physically, financially, and artistically, I have no interest in continuing,” and claimed he would “transfer” it back to Congress.
So if you believed him, he didn’t care anymore and that was that. Of course, for the wannabe authoritarian, who seeks to his name everywhere, that most certainly was not it.
Last Minute Drama:
So of course there was drama.
On Thursday, June 11, the Kennedy Center Board, ALL Trump appointees, voted to fight the order to remove Trump’s name from the building. So later that day, Trump’s Justice Department compliantly filed a notice of appeal, challenging the federal judge’s ruling, including his order to remove Trump’s name.
Two courts, the district court and a federal appeals court both denied their requests for an immediate stay on the ruling. There was a pause in between the two ruling, where the workers who were setting up scaffolding stopped working, making it almost impossible to finish the job by midnight on June 12.
Meanwhile, MSNOW had some fun, posting a livestream of the removal. Spectators also pulled up chairs to watch, with many staying into the wee hours.
